Lost Whales Believed to Have Made it to Pacific Ocean

It has been more than two weeks since a mother humpback whale and her calf were spotted in the Sacramento River, unable to find their way back to the Pacific Ocean. Now that all the efforts made by scientists and biologists may have paid off as it is believed that the pair have made their way back to the salty waters.

The two were last spotted on Tuesday evening but efforts to locate them on Wednesday have been unsuccessful, leading many experts to believe that they have made their way home.

Bernadette Fees, deputy director of the California Department of Fish and Game, stated “The assumption is if we have not sighted the mother and calf by late afternoon that they have made their way out to the Pacific.”

The fresh water of the Sacramento River had posed serious health risks to the two whales as lesions had formed on the pair’s skin as a result of being outside their natural salt water setting.
