EU Nixes Summit After Learning President Barack Obama Won’t Attend

The European Union has cancelled plans for a summit scheduled in Madrid after learning U.S. President Barack Obama declined his invitation to attend.

Scheduled for May, the summit was to focus on strengthening the ties between the United States and the 27-member bloc of nations that make up the EU. Obama’s decision not to attend was being perceived as a major snub by Spain, even more so due to the fact they learned of his decision through press reports.

White House officials have said Obama’s decision not to attend was based on a number of factors including his six visits to Europe in 2009 and the two EU-U.S. summits he attended last year. Despite the decision not to attend the summit Obama has said he is committed to strengthening the partnership.
