Fred Thompson is putting his acting career on hold and that may be a good sign for those hoping the 64-year-old Republican will enter the 2008 presidential race.
For the past five seasons Thompson has portrayed District Attorney Arthur Branch on NBC’s “Law & Order,” a show that earned him a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of an Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2004.
Having already served as a U.S. senator as a republican from Tennessee from 1994 to 2002 Thompson is believed to have his sites set on a bigger office in Washington.
“Law & Order” executive producer Dick Wolf revealed that Thompson had asked out of his contract. Wolf went on to say “Although he told me he has not made a firm decision about his political future, he felt that given the creative and scheduling constraints of the upcoming season.”
