Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley may not be able to brag that ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’ grossed the highest dollars on opening day, nor can they boast that their film holds the opening weekend record for box-office bucks but they still have plenty of reasons to smile.
While “Spider-Man 3” eclipsed the single day and three-day records by “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” the latest Disney installment has attracted a more global audience and raked in over $400 million in its first five days.
Depp and company will be looking to add to that haul this weekend and without any major blockbusters hitting the screen it looks like the buccaneers will once again hold the top spot with little trouble.
The top three movies are likely to stay in the same order as “Shrek the Third” and “Spider-Man 3” followed ‘Pirates’ last week but the new comedy flick “Knocked Up” may have what it takes to nip at the heals of the third place finisher.
Written by Judd Apatow, who brought the world “The 40 Year Old Virgin,” the movie stars Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen and offers audiences a twist on the beautiful girls falls for the ugly guy story. After hearing that she’s getting promoted Heigl opts to celebrate with a few drinks and when those few turn into a few too many she ends up sleeping with Rogen who doesn’t even appear to be the same species as Heigle. Of course she becomes pregnant and insists on having the baby. The rest of the movie brings both laughs and a well developed story that should attract plenty of word of mouth advertising to fill the seats.
