On Thursday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated the number of cases involving the salmonella outbreak caused by tainted peanut butter last August. In March the CDC confirmed 425 cases of salmonella poisoning tied to the Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter recall. That number has jumped to 628 cases and includes 47 states, a bump from 44 states in March.
The tainted peanut butter originated in the ConAgra Foods Inc. production plant in Sylvester, Ga. and has been blamed on moisture in the plant that led to the bacteria infecting the food.
That production plant is now undergoing renovations and isn’t expected to be operational until August. In the mean time ConAgra has announced another company will produce Peter Pan, which will return to shelves in July.
The infected jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter had a product code on the lid starting with the number 2111.
