Maria Sharapova advanced to the fourth round of the French Open on Saturday after knocking out Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1, 6-4. The second-seeded Sharapova breezed past her fellow Russian in the first set, taking just 28 minutes but the second set proved a bit more difficult.
Kudryavtseva broke Sharapova’s three straight times to take a 4-1 advantage in the second set but the two-time Grand Slam winner rallied to take the next five games to earn the set and the match.
Fifth-seeded Amelia Mauresmo wasn’t as fortunate. Despite holding a 3-0 lead in each set and playing on her home soil Mauresmo dropped her match to Czechoslovakian Lucie Safarova 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Mauresmo, who had her appendix removed in March, is still struggling to regain the form that led to titles at Wimbledon and the Australian Open in 2006. It was Safarova who knocked out Mauresmo in January when the Frenchwoman was trying to defend her Australian Open title.
