It has been a tale of two months for New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. After doing nearly everything perfect in April the two-time AL MVP can’t seem to match the success in May, and it has nothing to do with his hitting.
Having already been tried and convicted in the court of public opinion surrounding his involvement with a 30-year-old stripper, Rodriguez is now catching an earful from his peers for a recent incident on the field.
In Wednesday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays Rodriguez broke what many baseball purists consider an unwritten rule. With two outs in the ninth inning and Rodriguez on first base Jorge Pasada popped up to the left side of the infield. With third baseman Howie Clark camped out underneath the fly Rodriguez shouted something that distracted Clark and the ball dropped and a run scored.
Rodriguez claims that he just shouted “Hah’ while Clark contends he screamed “Mine,” and the play set off ill will from the Toronto bench.
Joe Torre weighed in on the incident on Friday saying “It was probably inappropriate to do it at the time he did it, but you can't change it, unfortunately.”
When asked about the reaction of the Blue Jays players, Torre said “They were angry, oh, there's no question. I can't say I blame them, but what are you going to do about it? What's happened has happened.”
