Romanian President Traian Basescu has said his country is willing to host missile interceptors as part of the United States’ new plans for a defense shield in Europe.
Last year President Barack Obama scrapped a defense shield plan that involved Poland and the Czech Republic after determining it would not serve the current needs of the United States. That decision was welcomed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin who said the shield was a threat to their national security.
Romania’s decision to host missiles brings the controversial defense shield program back to the forefront of U.S.-Russian relations and could cause further tension. While the U.S. has said the shield is designed to protect its allies from attacks by “rogue states” Russia has said the move would upset the strategic balance of the region.
In announcing his country’s willingness to host the missile interceptors Basescu said the system would “protect the whole of Romania's territory.” He also emphasized that the decision, approved by the country’s supreme defense council, “is not directed against Russia.”
While the decision to host the missiles has accepted acknowledged by Basescu and the supreme defense council it still needs approval by parliament.
