Workers hestitant to seek treatment for drug addiction and alcoholism

Employed individuals hesitant to seek drug rehab and alcohol rehab services for addiction and alcoholism

Connecticut | New York- According to a recent, national survey conducted by the American Psychiatric Association, American workers are more hesitant to seek treatment for mental health issues, including drug and alcohol addictions, than for physical health problems.

Among employees, 76 percent believed their work status would be damaged by seeking treatment for drug addiction, 73 percent for alcoholism, fewer for ailments such as depression, diabetes, and heart disease.

“The stigma attached to drug addiction and alcoholism is clearly prohibiting individuals from seeking the treatment they truly want and need”, a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center states. “It’s been estimated that more than 13.1 million American workers use illicit drugs. The fear of workplace harassment, including loss of job, is clearly a factor in whether or not an individual will seek drug addiction treatment, especially in times of economic crisis. In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, with a provision offering protection to alcoholics and those who wish to become free of drug addictions, yet a decade later, we still have workers who are fearful of the backlash from their employer should they decide to get clean and live sober. We need to educate employers in the dangers of workplace drug addiction and give them the tools necessary to create a nurturing, safe environment for their employees who desire to be drug and alcohol-free. Empathy starts with education. And that’s really what we need most.”

With the national unemployment rate at 10 percent and New York's unemployment rate at 10.4 percent (higher than the national average) many employees are fearful of losing their jobs and being cast to an overcrowded market. An additional barrier continue to be the price for treatments which are on average to be over $1,000 per day.
