Justin Verlander and Detroit Tigers Agree to Five-Year, $80 Million Deal

The Detroit Tigers have locked up their number one pitcher for the next five years after agreeing to an $80 million deal with Justin Verlander.

 

Verlander had been slated for arbitration and the 26-year-old righty had been looking for $9.5 million for next season while the Tigers were offering $6.9 million. With the new agreement both sides can put aside the arbitration talk and concentrate on the 2010 MLB season.

 

Verlander is coming off a season in which he finished 19-9 (tied for most wins the AL) with a 3.45 ERA. Verlander led the AL with 269 strikeouts and 240 innings pitched
