Four men charged with conspiracy to blow up JFK International Airport

Four men are charged in an attempted attack on the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The men plotted to blow up a fuel supply and pipeline at the airport. The plot was discovered when they tried to recruit one more person. The man they attempted to recruit was a police informer.

A former cargo handler was arrested in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday, and two other men, one being a former member of Guyanese parliament, were arrested in Trinidad. The fourth man has not been found but is believed to be in Trinidad.

American Law Enforcement Officials say neither the airport nor passengers were ever in any danger.

Experts say that the plot to blow up the pipelines would never have worked. Safety measures such as valves would have prevented the attack because they would have shut down. Although the attack would have failed experts say that it would have resulted in the airport receiving a lot of publicity.

Officials say that the conspirators conducted video and photo surveillance of the airport in order to find targets and escape routes. They reportedly traveled from the U.S., Guyana and Trinidad to discuss the plot and to try and recruit others for assistance with the financial and technical aspects of the plan.
