High School Summer Camp Teaches Life Skills to Students

More parents are in search of high school summer camps that focus on developing students' life skills as well as their learning skills according to the president of a leading summer enrichment program.

Bobbi DePorter, president of SuperCamp, a business she co-founded in 1982, says that parents of middle school and high school students are looking to round out their kids' education with skills that develop their communication and leadership skills, while building their confidence, motivation and focus prior to college.

"So many parents who initially enroll their sons and daughters in SuperCamp for the academic skills, tell me after that it's the life skills training that has had a profound impact on their kids' growth," says DePorter.

One such life skills deals with a student’s ability to focus his attention on the present moment, making each moment count and giving each task his very best effort. SuperCamp calls this skill “This is it!”.

SuperCamp facilitators take time to show students that a “This is it!” mentality can make a big difference in the way they live their lives. It can make each moment powerful, productive and fulfilling. It can help students get more out of school, friendships, sports and everything else they like to do.

The life skills instruction at SuperCamp is customized to the specific ages and grade levels of each of SuperCamp’s three programs: Junior Forum is a seven-day program for students about to enter grades 6-8, Senior Forum is 10 days and is for teens entering grades 9-12, and Quantum U is eight days and is open to students entering and already in college.

The programs are held each summer at schools across the U.S. In 2010, SuperCamp will be located on eight college campuses, including UCLA, Stanford and Brown, and one college prep school, Lake Forest Academy, in Chicago.

SuperCamp offers three Southern California summer camps, with Loyola Marymount and Cal State San Marcos joining UCLA. In addition, SuperCamp runs a series of programs at its Bay Area summer camp held at Stanford.
