Andy McDonald scored a pair of second period goals and Dustin Penner broke a 2-2- tie four minutes into the third period to lift the Anaheim Ducks past the Ottawa Senators 3-2 and pull them to within win of capturing their first Stanley Cup trophy.
It didn’t look good for the Ducks early as their offense struggled throughout the first period, managing just two shots while Jean-Sebastien Giguere faced 13 shots off the Senators sticks. It was the 13th that got by Giguere that gave Ottawa a 1-0 as Daniel Alfredsson scored on a power play with one second remaining in the period.
Anaheim turned it around in the second period and their defense, missing team leader Chris Pronger due to his one-game suspension, collapsed on the Ottawa offense and allowed just four shots in the frame. Midway through the period Andy McDonald found the back of the net and a minute later he put the Ducks in front 2-1 with his second goal.
Dany Heatley tied the score at 2-2 with two minutes remaining in the second period but that was the last of Ottawa’s offense.
Four minutes into the final frame McDonald set up Dustin Penner’s go-ahead goal for a 3-2 lead and Giguere didn’t allow any of the Senators’ six shots to slip past him as the Ducks split their two game set in Ottawa to take a 3-1 series lead.
Both teams will meet in Anaheim on Wednesday for game five of their best of seven series.
