Tony Thompson, the 31-year-old singer in the R&B group Hi-Five, was found dead from an apparent drug overdose outside an apartment complex in Waco, Texas on Friday night.
Thompson signed with Jive Records in 1990 as part of the quintet Hi-Five and their first album went multi-platinum. They hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with the infectious track “I Like the Way (The Kissing Game)” and scored success with the single “I Can’t Wait Another Minute” off the same album.
After the group split in 1994 Thompson launched a solo career and released “Sexsational” in 1995. He received minor success from the single “I Wanna Love Like That.”
In 2005 Thompson re-formed Hi-Five with four new members and they released “The Return” in 2006 on his own label N’Depth.
While initial reports have indicated he died of a drug overdose no official cause has been released.
