Oprah Winfrey Presents Ralph Lauren with American Fashion Legend Award at CFDA’s

Oprah Winfrey presented long time designer Ralph Lauren with the American Legend award at the 25th CFDA Awards held in New York on Monday. In bestowing the award Winfrey said of Lauren, “I believe that we have a consciousness as Americans to honor who we are, he represents an icon in the definition of the word, having symbolized what is possible, what is meaningful - sometimes fashion can be kind of frivolous.”

Ralph Lauren was also honored with the menswear designer of the year. Lauren had won the menswear designer award in 1996 and won the womenswer designer of the year award in 1995.

This year the womenswear designer of the year resulted in a tie with both Oscar de la Renta and the duo of Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler taking the award. It was the second time Oscar de la Renta won the womenswear designer of the year award; he last collected the trophy in 2000.

Derek Lam took the honors for accessory designer of the year.
