With the choice of ACCC Lisbon conductor, the Belgian transmission operator, Elia was able to increase the carrying capacity of the 150kV line between Mol and Beringen without modifying or replacing any of the lattice steel towers. The key issue in this project was the ability to transmit the output of a new power plant while keeping one circuit in service and limiting the environmental impact. The ACCC conductor was chosen due to its efficiency and to avoid the expense and difficulty of modifying structures.
The energy efficient ACCC conductor contains around 28% more aluminum in the same diameter and weighs less than a traditional ACSR conductor. This results in a line loss reduced by around 1/3rd as compared to a similar sized ACSR.
Composite Technology Corporation, based in Irvine, California, USA, develops, manufactures and sells innovative, high performance, energy efficient electrical transmission conductors through its subsidiary, CTC Cable Corporation.
