It took just 65 minutes for Ana Ivanovic to pick apart Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-1 at the French Open on Thursday and advance to her first Grand Slam final.
It’s not only Ivanovic’s first appearance in a Grand Slam final but her country’s as well. The 19-year-old Serb took advantage of several unforced errors from Sharapova and five double-faults to punch her ticket to the finals at Roland Garros.
Ivanovic broke Sharapova’s serve in the second game of the first set and repeated the feat in the sixth for a 5-1 lead. Having a chance to wrap up the set, Ivanovic dropped her serve but Sharapova returned the favor with a double-fault to hand the set to the Serb.
The second set was as ugly as the first for Sharapova as she fell behind 0-5 before finally winning a game on her serve. Ivanovic then sent an ace past the Russian on her first match point to earn the victory.
