Justine Henin Captures Third Straight French Open Title

Justine Henin became the first woman since Monica Seles to win three straight French Open titles after she knocked off 19-year-old Ana Ivanovic in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

Henin, the first Belgian to ever win a French Open title, now has four in the past five years and matched Seles’ 1990-92 streak of three straight. Only Suzanne Lenglen’s string of five straight from 1921-26 is longer than Henin’s.

For Ivanovic, playing in her first Grand Slam final, overcoming the atmosphere at Roland Garros was too much. The Serb committed 26 unforced errors and said after the match “I was thinking more about the occasion than about my game. That's what I was afraid of.”

Despite trailing in each of the first four games Henin used her experience and poise to take advantage of the costly mistakes made by Ivanovic. After taking a 3-1 lead in the first set Henin dominated the rest of the way, taking 18 of the next 22 points.

Henin will now set he sites on next month’s Wimbledon, the lone Grand Slam title she has yet to capture.
