The New York Knicks have become one of the bigger let downs in the NBA in past seasons. Spending large amounts of money on star players have yet to pay off for one of New York’s favorite teams. There have been multiple coaching changes due to the lack of the results on the court. The expectation in New York is always the playoff with a chance to bring home a title. Fans and the city expect greatness from the teams that they represent in the Big Apple.

The last time the Knicks made the postseason was back in the 2012-13 season where they won their first playoff appearance since 1999. Last season the Knicks had a record of 37-45. Their record put them in third place in the Atlantic Division and ninth in the Eastern Conference. The roster that the Knicks have makes a poor record seem rather surprising. After evaluating where the Knicks are at as a team, the owners of the Knicks decided to make one of the largest splashes possible by hiring the legend Phil Jackson to become the President of Basketball Operations. Phil’s first matter of business was to find a new coach to bring greatness back to the Knicks and the city of New York.

After interviews were conducted, the decision for Jackson resulted in the hiring of Derek Fisher as their new coach. This season will mark the first year of coaching for Fisher. One year removed from playing in the league, Fisher now becomes the man in charge of the Knicks roster. Fisher played in the league for 18 seasons and won five championships. Phil Jackson coached Fisher in Los Angeles so he is well aware of his basketball IQ. They share the same philosophies and concepts when it comes to play on the court.

The roster that Fisher is inheriting includes Carmelo Anthony, J.R. Smith, Amar’e Stoudemire, Iman Shumpert, and a young duo in Tim Hardaway Jr. and Shane Larkin. Before the season started, rumors began to circulate that Anthony would not be returning to the Knicks. However, Anthony decided that New York is where the superstar wants to play. When Amar’e Stoudemire signed with the Knicks back in 2010, he figured to be the ultimate piece to the puzzle to increase the level of Carmelo Anthony’s game. Amar’e has had flashes of greatness as a Knick, but injuries have plagued the big man’s seasons. This year if he can stay healthy, he should have a significant impact on the success of the team. The Knicks have had a rough start to the year with a 2-6 record. Luckily for Fisher and the Knicks, they play an 82 game schedule and have plenty of time to make a turnaround.
