George Clooney, Brad Pitt and the rest of the gang from “Ocean’s Thirteen” sank the Johnny Depp led crew of “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” and took the top spot at this weekends box-office.
“Ocean’s Thirteen” brought in an estimated $37.1 million easily surpassing the $21.3 million that ‘Pirates’ wrangled from moviegoers.
The third installment of the ‘Ocean’s’ franchise has followed the trend set by each of the major blockbusters released this summer with a huge opening. Now they are hoping they don’t follow suit and suffer the same fate come next weekend. After “Spider-Man 3,” “Shrek the Third,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” totaled massive openings they each suffered equally large drops the following weekend.
Despite ‘Pirates’ losing the top spot it has still grossed $253.6 million in domestic ticket sales and is nearing the $750 million mark in worldwide sales.
Last weekend’s big winner, “Knocked-Up” continued its strong showing with a $20 million haul, raising its total to $66.2 million.
