United Food Group had already recalled almost half a million pounds of meat when they opted to voluntaily recall an additional 5.7 million pounds over the weekend. Tyson Fresh Meats also recalled 40,000 pounds of their beef that was sent to Wal-Mart stores. The tainted beef was shipped to 11 states. At least 14 E-coli cases have been linked with the beef.
"It is small compared with the 24.7 billion pounds of beef that are produced each year in the U.S.," said David Goldman of the USDA.
In the last two months there have been six recalls of beef. Other products that have been recalled such as peanut butter, pet food, and spinach have taken the attention off the beef, critics fear.
Moran’s All Natural, Miller Meat Co., Stater Bros. Markets, Inter-American Products and Basha’s have all sold the recalled meat. All packages have "EST. 1241" marked on them. They have "sell by dates of April 29, April 30, and May 5.
The meat was sold in stores including Albertsons, Sam’s Club, Smart & Final, Stater Bros. and Superior Warehouse. States involved in the recall include Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and Montana.
