Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, named by the United Nations as an international aid coordinator, has pledged to improve the distribution of aid to the victims of Haiti’s devastating earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people.
While aid has poured into Haiti since the Jan. 12 quake the distribution of that aid has been slowed due to a number of factors. During a visit to the country’s capital Port-au-Prince Clinton addressed the frustration of the people victims, “I'm sorry it's taken this long but these people are working hard and what I'm trying to do now is to identify the things that aren't being done and need to be speeded up and fill those blanks. I'm doing the best I can.”
As many as one million Haitians are in need of aid and many of them have been packed into makeshift camps, forced to live in tents. Violence inside those camps has left many opting to sleep near their fallen homes or on the streets.
Clinton has vowed to structure the distribution of aid in a manner that would provide victims with needed food, water and medicine. With much of the city’s infrastructure laying in ruins the process of moving aid from the airport to the areas in need has been extremely difficult.
