Barry Bonds moved to within eight home runs of Hank Aaron’s career mark on Monday night after sending an 0-1 offering from Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Josh Towers 438 feet into the seats beyond the right-centerfield brick wall of AT&T Park in San Francisco.
The blast tied the score at 3-3 and served as atonement for Bonds after a shaky performance out in leftfield that was partly responsible for the Giants falling into a 3-0 hole in the first inning.
Tracking down a long fly ball off the bat of the Blue Jays Alex Rios the 42-year-old Bonds got a glove on it but failed to haul it in resulting in a double. Then with two outs and runners on second and third Bonds had a chance to help Giants starter Matt Morris out of the inning with no damage but he misjudged a fly ball from Aaron Hill that plated two. Hill then came around to score on an Adam Lind single making it 3-0.
San Francisco got a run back in the bottom of the first after Ryan Klesko singled home Dave Roberts.
The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the fourth when Bonds stepped to the plate following another Klesko single. That’s when Bonds connected on his 13th home run of the year and tied the score. San Francisco would go on to take the lead after Omar Vizquel laid down a perfect sacrifice to score Ray Durham from third making teh score 4-3.
From that point on it was all Matt Morris who shut down the Blue Jays and improved to 7-3 on the year after tossing a complete game.
