A company in Florida recalled toothpaste that was imported from China. They believe the toothpaste contains diethylene glycol, a poisonous chemical which can cause kidney and liver problems.
In several countries the chemical has resulted in the deaths of 51 people after they took cold medicine that contained diethylene glycol. The chemical has been used in antifreeze and as a substitute for glycerin.
The recall includes Shir toothpaste products named Shir Fresh Mint Flouride, Shir Fresh Ice Shir Mint Flouride, and Shir Fresh Cool Shir Mint Flouride. Consumers are asked to stop use of the product and return the toothpaste or throw it away.
So far no cases involving the toothpaste have been reported.
