New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and Detroit Tigers designated hitter Gary Sheffield were named co-American League Players of the Week on Monday.
For Alex Rodriguez the honor was a welcome relief from the tabloid reports of his relationship with a blonde dancer. Rodriguez seemed to turn his attention to the "field" between the lines as he hit .400 for the week with four home runs and knocked in 16 while totaling a .960 slugging percentage and recording a .515 on-base percentage.
Gary Sheffield was equally impressive for the Detroit Tigers. The designated hitter started to find his groove after pounding out four homeruns and driving in 11 in his six games. Sheffield hit at a .417 clip while marking a 1.000 slugging percentage.
