President Bush works for support of immigration bill

President Bush made a rare visit to the Capitol today in support of the immigration bill he wants to pass. Although the White House supports the bill he faces strong opposition from the Republican Party. The bill will legalize 12 million unlawful immigrants and tighten border security.

Bush said today he knows immigration is an emotional issue and many people don’t agree with the bill but he said, "Now is the time to get it done." He says the bill needs to be passed because the "status quo is unacceptable."

"Some members in there believe that we need to move a comprehensive bill, some don't," Bush said. "I understand that. It's a highly emotional issue."

Many of the party’s supporters see the bill as giving amnesty to people who illegally came into the country.

"It's going to take a lot of hard work, a lot of effort. We've got to convince the American people this bill is the best way to enforce our border. I believe that without the bill, it's going to be harder to enforce the border. The status quo is not acceptable," said President Bush.

Bush says he realizes lots of hard work will have to be done to get the bill to pass but he is confident that he can get the job done.
