New York Yankees DH Jason Giambi could be facing suspension from baseball commissioner Bud Selig if he refuses to cooperate with former Senate Majority George Mitchell’s investigation of steroid use in Major League Baseball.
On June 6 Selig gave Giambi two weeks to “cooperate fully” with the Mitchell probe yet the Yankees slugger has yet to make a decision about the meeting.
Giambi has been at the center of steroid allegations ever since he admitted before a federal grand jury in 2003 that he had used steroids and human growth hormones. Since that time Giambi has made vague apologies about using substances yet has never publicly used the word “steroids” in his apology.
Selig has said that he would take into consideration Giambi’s involvement in the Mitchell investigation before making a decision on disciplining him.
If Selig opts to discipline Giambi he could be in for a fight with the players union who has said Selig has no grounds for taking action against the 12-year veteran.
