Where Does Mitt Romney Stand On Abortion?

Abortion has become quite a contentious issue in the presidential election campaign in America. It is being used to gain mileage and score points.

We now see the Republicans attacking each other on this rather touchy issue. Arizona Sen. John McCain attacked Mitt Romney for his stance on abortion.

McCain’s camp says that a video available on YouTube shows that Romney, while he was the governor of Massachusetts, supported maintaining abortion rights in Massachusetts six months after he opposed abortion rights.

In the meantime, Romney claims that he started opposing abortion rights in November 2004 after he had a conversation with a stem cell researcher. He said that conversation made him feel as if the value of human life had reduced.

However, the new video on YouTube shows otherwise. It shows Romney saying in a May 2005 press conference the following: "I am absolutely committed to my promise to maintain the status quo with regards to laws relating to abortion and choice and so far I've been able to successfully do that. And my personal philosophical views about this issue is not something that I think would do anything other than distract from what I think is a more critical agenda."

The McCain camp is using this video to their advantage. They feel that Romney would now have to convince Republican voters whether he can be trusted on key issues that important to them.

What is Romney’s actual stance on abortion at the moment is quite debatable even though his camp reiterated he is against abortion and has been since the stem cell debate. This maybe one issue that will return to haunt Romney.
