The New York Yankees signed two Chinese teenagers on Monday after becoming the first major league team to be granted the approval of China’s baseball association.
While neither one of the 19-year-olds will be in the Yankees starting lineup anytime soon they are both seen as strong prospects for an aging club.
The Yankees will introduce Kai Liu, a left-handed pitcher and Zhenwang Zhang, a catcher, at a July 6 news conference at Yankee Stadium. From there both players will report to New York’s minor league complex in Tampa.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said of the signing “This is an exciting opportunity for us to integrate Chinese players into the organization. We believe that this is the start of something we can develop further as we work toward our commitment to help grow the game of baseball in China.”
