Will Iowa GOP Straw Poll Be Fair?

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee announced on June 13, 2007 that he has all intentions of taking part in the Iowa GOP Straw Poll but questioned the fairness of the poll.

He was surprised with the announcement made by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Arizona Sen. John McCain that they would not be taking part in the Straw Poll. Huckabee said that he had always planned on participating in it and did not think otherwise at any given moment.

While Giuliani and McCain will not be taking part, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, and former Wisconsin. Gov. Tommy Thompson have announced their intention of being part of the Straw Poll. Possible GOP presidential contender and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson is still contemplating whether he should join the fray.

On the fairness of the Iowa Straw Poll, Huckabee said Giulani and McCain were being portrayed by the media as the leaders and yet they were not even willing to take part in the Straw Poll. While Mitt Romney had already declared his victory in the Straw Poll.

Huckabee opined “One of the things that the rest of us have to do is to evaluate is: Are we going to a game that’s already been decided? Is it going to be an honest and legitimate and fair test of support?”

The Iowa Straw Poll will be held on August 11, 2007 in Ames.
