According to a survey conducted by Mason-Dixie, a polling firm, in South Carolina on June 17, 2007, it was found that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and Republican candidate Fred Thompson are the favorites for the South Carolina’s 2008 presidential primary.

The survey found that Obama has support of 34 percent Democratic voters while US Senator Hillary Clinton has 25 percent. This means the African-American support for Obama is helping him.

John Edwards, the former US Senator, came in third with 12 percent of the votes.

The Republican voters are favoring Fred Thompson, who is a popular television actor and former Tennessee senator. However, Thompson has not officially entered the race for president. Second place went to former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani who polled 21 percent against 25 percent for Thompson.

While Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor, came in third with 11 percent of the votes.

The Democratic primary in South Carolina is scheduled for January 29, 2008 while the Republican primary will be held on February 2, 2008.
