Drew Brees was 32/39 passing for 288 yards and a pair of touchdowns, Marques Colston had seven receptions for 83 yards and Tracy Porter had a fourth quarter game-clinching interception he returned 74-yards for a touchdown as the New Orleans Saints capped a remarkable season with a 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.
Indianapolis was the team that jumped to the lead as they went up 3-0 in the first quarter on a Matt Stover field goal and then extended that lead to 10-0 when Peyton Manning hit Pierre Garcon on a 19-yard touchdown pass and it looked like the Colts were rolling.
That momentum appeared to stall in the second quarter as the New Orleans offense chewed up much of the frame, and while they put just six points on the board courtesy of a pair of Garrett Hartley field goals the 10-6 score at halftime gave the Saints some belief for the second half.
Just as they put themselves back in the game in the second quarter the Saints asserted themselves in the third as they opened with an on-side kick and recovered. That paid off less than four minutes later when Brees hit Pierre Thomas on a 16-yard touchdown pass and the Saints had their first lead at 13-10. While New Orleans clearly had turned the momentum the Colts weren’t ready to go away and on their next drive they recaptured the lead when Joseph Addai scored on a 4-yard TD run to make it 17-13. The Saints offense continued to move the ball though and when Hartley kicked his third field goal of the game New Orleans entered the final frame trailing 17-16.
Indy kept the Saints off the board for nearly ten minutes in the fourth but when Brees found Jeremy Shockey on a 2-yard TD pass New Orleans was back in front. A two-point conversion on a Lance Moore reception gave the Saints a 24-17 advantage with 5:42 left in the game. With Manning at QB the Colts showed little concern and the NFL’s four-time MVP moved Indianapolis down the field and looked to have them in position for a tie but Tracy Porter stepped in front of a pass, intercepted, and went 74-yards for a game clinching touchdown with 3:12 left in the game.
Manning would bring the Colts back down the field and the team had a shot at climbing back to within seven but a fourth-down pass to Reggie Wayne fell to the ground and New Orleans had the game wrapped up.
