Karen Storey’s love of her younger sister saved Karen’s life when she made a decision at the young age of 14 to live. She had contemplated ending her life after years of abuse, both physical and sexual but wanted to protect her younger sister as much as she could. Her first recollection of abuse was when she was 2 years old. Her story is about courage, strength and the commitment to go from victim to achiever.
In the book, Crystalline Moments, she talks about how she thought that once she moved out of the house she could put that part of her life behind her. The problem with trying to ignore a part of your past is that it will come up later. With many victims of abuse it shows itself again by being involved in other abusive relationships. That is what happened to Karen. She ended up marrying an abusive husband that would not let her out of the house. She was a mother of 2 children and she talks about how difficult it was to get away from her husband. She had no money, no business, no home and was in hiding. This is not an uncommon situation for many women that are in abusive situations.
In her story, Karen chronicles how she went from victim to survivor then to achiever in her inspirational story. In addition to abuse she talks about her son being put into classes for challenged kids when in reality he was a highly gifted child. She talks about the difficulties in dealing with his challenges and how she ended up graduating from Virginia Tech magna cum laude. She talks about how those moments of clarity provided her with the opportunities to move her life forward.
She now works as a teacher and looks for children that may be suffering while living in an abusive situation. She talks about how if she can only help just one child a year she feels fulfilled and a sense of gratitude.
Many people find themselves or someone they love in an abusive relationship. Her story will help them move from victim to achiever.
