Nine Fireman Killed in Furniture Warehouse Blaze

Nine firefighters in Charleston, South Carolina were killed Monday evening when the roof of a furniture warehouse collapsed after a fire engulfed the building.

Firefighters responded to a blaze at the Sofa Super Store around 7:00 p.m. and were able to rescue four employees who had been inside the building. While attempting to put out the fire the buildings roof collapsed causing what one witness described as “a 30-foot tornado of flames.”

Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley had a difficult time coming to grips with the tragedy saying “To lose nine is just unbelievable.”

Riley appeared at a news conference on Tuesday morning and said “Nine brave, heroic, courageous firefighters of the city of Charleston have perished fighting fire in a most courageous and fearless manner, carrying out their duties. To all of their loved ones, our heart goes out to them.”
