Wimbledon revealed the seeding for this year’s premier tennis event and to nobody’s surprise Roger Federer earned the men’s top seed while French Open champion Justine Henin was named the women’s top seed.
The seedings were determined in part by the players past performances on grass, a surface that has favored Federer over his career. Federer has won the last four Wimbledon titles and is looking to join Bjorn Borg as the only other men’s singles player to capture five straight at the All England Club since 1907.
Raphael Nadal, who just beat Federer at the French Open, was named the number two seed at Wimbledon. Nadal lost to Federer last year in the finals. Andy Roddick will enter the Grand Slam event as the number three seed.
Justine Henin took the top seed on the women’s side after capturing her third straight French Open title and fourth overall. Henin reached the finals at Wimbledon last year but fell to Amelie Mauresmo. She was also the runner-up in 2001 when Venus Williams took the title. Wimbledon’s 2004 champion Maria Sharapova is seeded number two and she is followed by Jelena Jankovic at number three.
Wimbledon begins on Monday.
