Sammy Sosa Hits Homerun Number 600 in Rangers 7-3 Win over the Cubs

Texas Rangers slugger Sammy Sosa added his name to a short list of baseball’s elite on Wednesday night after connecting on a 1-2 delivery from Chicago Cubs starter Jason Marquis and driving it over the right-center field wall.

For Sosa, homerun number 600 couldn’t have been more significant. The charismatic bomber spent part of his first big league season playing for the Rangers before heading to the Chicago White Sox for two full seasons. Sosa then moved across town and played for the Cubs from 1992-2004 where he established himself as one of the most prolific homerun hitters of all time. During a stretch from 1998-2001 Sosa had season totals of 66, 63, 50 and 64 homeruns. In his 13-years spent in a Cubs uniform Sosa hit 545 homeruns but by 2004 Chicago had grown tired of Sammy and sent him packing.

After spending one season with the Baltimore Orioles in 2005 Sosa hung up his spikes and headed home to the Dominican Republic to take a year off. By 2007 he was ready to return and after a strong preseason for the Rangers he earned a spot on the roster and began his pursuit of the exclusive 600 club.

Sosa’s name is now on a list that includes Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays.

The 600 homerun club may be welcoming another member by the end of the season. The Cincinnati Reds star Ken Griffey Jr. is sitting on 582 career homeruns and has already hit 19 bombs this year.
