The Orson Welles classic “Citizen Kane” was once again named greatest movie ever by the American Film Institute on Wednesday.
AFI originally rated the 100 greatest films of all time in 1998 and after ten years took another look and made some revisions. While “Citizen Kane” held firm to the number one spot Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” jumped one spot to number two while “Casablanca” fell to number three.
Martin Scorsese saw what is arguably his greatest work, “Raging Bull,” move from number 24 ten years ago to number four in the new list.
“Singin’ in the Rain” made a sizeable jump in the list as well moving from number ten to number five while “Gone with the Wind” fell two spots to number six. “Lawrence of Arabia” suffered the same fate, falling two spots to land at number seven.
Steven Spielberg saw his film “Schindler’s List” move up one spot to number eight and Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller “Vertigo” jumped 52 spots to break the top ten and land at number nine. Rounding out the top ten was “The Wizard of Oz” which fell from number six to number ten.
Only four films made from the decade that followed the original list made the new top 100. “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” was number 50, “Saving Private Ryan” was number 71, “Titanic” landed at 83 and “The Sixth Sense” was rated the 89th greatest movie of all time.
The rankings were based on ballots cast by a 1,500 filmmakers, actors, writers, critics and other Hollywood insiders.
