Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych is expected to be declared the winner of the country’s presidential election after a closely contested battle with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
According to poll results Yanukovych held a narrow 2.6% lead over Tymoshenko after 97% of the votes were counted. Despite the results Tymoshenko has refused to concede and is expected to challenge the outcome.
A victory by Yanukovych, who favors closer ties with Moscow, would be a clear indication of the frustration the Ukrainian people have had with the pro-Western leaders who swept to power in the 2004 “Orange Revolution.”
Yanukovych had been a presidential candidate in 2004 after serving as the country’s PM under President Leonid Kuchma but he finished runner-up to President Viktor Yushchenko and served as PM under the new leader from August 4, 2006 to December 18, 2007.
Yushchenko’s popularity waned as the Ukrainian people grew frustrated with the lack of change in the country and he failed to make it out of the first-round of voting in the recent presidential election.
