Iran has sentenced opposition leader Mohsen Aminzadeh to six years in prison for his role in organizing and promoting the violent protests that followed last June’s controversial presidential election.
Aminzadeh, a main supporter of presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, was detained by authorities shortly after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared winner. His detention came as thousands of demonstrators filled the streets of Tehran in protest of the election results.
The sentence was handed down by a branch of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran and according to his lawyer Abbas Shiri, “He was charged with organizing gatherings and disturbing the country's security, as well as spreading propaganda against the system by giving interviews to foreign channels.”
