Rehabilitation for Alcohol Addiction among Native Americans in Arizona

According to 2008 Census Bureau figures, the State of Arizona has a population of approximately 6,500,200, of which approximately 5% are Native American. Because many Native Americans still adhere to ancient customs, traditions, and religions, alcohol rehab among this specific group may need to be approached in a slightly different manner.

According to information obtained from a publication known as Eric Digest, alcohol addiction affects not only family and loved ones in the Native American population, where indeed the addiction cycle may be noticeable through three to four generations, but it can also have a farther-reaching effect. Community ties among Native Americans are strong; therefore, one family’s problems may produce a ripple effect among other community members.

Further, Native Americans in Arizona often communicate in their tribal language. Depending on the tribe to which a person belongs, this can include Hopi, Lakota, Navaho, Pima, and Yaqui. Additionally, many Native Americans speak Spanish.

Native Americans will often seek and use holistic treatment, as many hold a strong belief that all aspects of the body—be they physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental—are connected. For this and other reasons, many Native Americans still seek help for any problem, including alcohol abuse and addiction, from tribal members who are considered healers. These can include medicine men or women, and/or shamans.

Many tribal healers practice traditional medicine. However, they will often recommend that tribal members who suffer from alcohol or similar addictions seek rehabilitation in a treatment program.

However, language preference, along with recognition of Native American culture, can cause barriers when determining the best course of alcohol treatment. It is very important, both to the person seeking treatment, his or her family and community, and those providing the help that these situations be addressed with the respect and honor due them.
