Sri Lanka Authorities Arrest Defeated Presidential Candidate Gen Sarath Fonseka

Sri Lanka’s defeated presidential candidate Gen. Sarath Fonseka has been arrested and charged with “committing military offences,” including allegations that he divulged sensitive state information to the public and was plotting to assassinate President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Fonseka, who was defeated by Rajapaksa in the recent presidential election, has denied the allegations and has expressed his own concerns about an assassination attempt. He had been at his office in Colombo when military police arrived and detained him. According to witnesses he was dragged from his office in what was called a “very disgraceful manner:”

Fonseka was in charge of Sri Lanka’s army when it finally defeated the Tamil Tiger rebels last year. Shortly after tackling the rebels there was a fallout between Fonseka and Rajapaksa which led to a bitter presidential election.

The results of that election showed Rajapaksa defeating Fonseka by a considerable margin yet the former army leader has protested those results, saying they were rigged.
