Telefonica Wants to Charge Search Engines for Services

Financial World News Update by Equities Magazine

Spanish telecoms operator Telefonica held a press conference Monday to announce that it is considering charging a fee to search engines like Google and Yahoo in order to compensate for the bandwidth they use.

Telefonica President Cesar Alierta said until this point Google, Yahoo and other search companies inhabit network bandwidth free of charge, a practice that works to their benefit and to Telefonica’s loss.

Telefonica, which has operations across Spain and Latin America, supplies the network, customer support, installation and repairs to search engines all while helping them generate profits.
