Attorney Brian O. Sutter of the Port Charlotte Florida based, All Injuries Law Firm, commented on the NHTSA’s findings of a lantern pattern office handling auto recalls.
With Fiat-Chrysler under continuing investigation into defective gas tanks that burst into flames when the vehicle is hit from behind. The gas tanks have been installed in 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty vehicles. This defect has so far been blamed for at least 75 deaths.
In addition to the defective gas tanks, Fiat Chrysler is also under pressure from a long line of potentially deadly design defects including the air bags in Dodge Ram pick ups.
A design oversight allows the steering column wire harness to rub against the metal parts of the air bag. This eventually removes the insulation form the wiring and can cause a short. The short has been shown to trigger the air bag deployment randomly.
Further back, Fiat Chrysler also was shown to have a defective rear axle pinion nut that resulted in another settlement between Fiat Chrysler and the Federal Government.
Attorney Brian O. Sutter offered this comment about Fiat Chrysler’s pattern of poorly handling recalls” It’s amazing to me that given the severity of the defects, how many people that have been injured and killed that Chrysler has been able to drag their feet fixing these vehicles so long. It’s also striking the NHTSA allowed this situation to continue year after year while the public has been exposed to these dangerous defects NHTSA’s recent announcement of unprecedented fines and actions including forcing Chrysler to pay customers to get their vehicles fixed and even buying back vehicles is showing that they may have finally gotten the message and are now taking Chrysler’s long history of avoiding recalls seriously. However many feel this does not go far enough and criminal charges should be filed.”
