An aide of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who is always besides him, took a leave of absence after is came out that he was being investigated in two states for impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Jay Garrity is Romney’s director of operations and is always seen at the side of him.
Garrity is being investigated for leaving a long message with the answering service of a plumbing company and complaining about the bad driving by a driver of the company. He is alleged to have identified himself as Trooper Garrity.
Posing as an officer is a misdemeanor and carries a fine of up to $400 and one year imprisonment.
The second case that is being investigated is in New Hampshire. Garrity stands accused of telling Mark Leibovich, a New York Times reporter, that he had run the license plate of the reporter’s rented car, and he should not be part of the convoy following Romney.
A law in New Hampshire makes it illegal for citizens to access the state’s license plate database.
