“Chemical Ali” was one of three former aides to dictator Saddam Hussein to be sentenced to death by hanging by an Iraqi court on Sunday for his involvement in the deaths of over 100,000 Kurds in the 1980s.
Dubbed “Chemical Ali” for his use of poisonous gas and chemicals in Iraq’s campaign against the Kurds from 1980 through 1988, Ali Hassan al-Majid will be joined on the gallows by Sultan Hashem Ahmed and Hussein Rashid Mohammed.
Ahmed was an Iraqi army commander during the country’s war with Iran and in 1988 became chief-in-charge of Operation Anfal, the campaign to wipe out the Kurds.
Rashid Mohammed was a former Republican Guard commander who also served as deputy general commander of the Iraqi armed forces and was an assistant chief of staff for military operations.
