Pennsylvania Voters Have To Bring Money To Be Counted

Senator Barack Obama was in Pittsburgh on June 20, 2007 for a fundraiser. However, the voters in Pennsylvania did not get an opportunity to meet him or hear his campaign message.

The reason -- Obama was at a private fundraiser and was not scheduled for any public events. He was not even holding any media events.

The Pennsylvania primary is held quite late and as a result most presidential candidates do not make an effort to go to the State during the early stages of campaigning.

Kavita Masthoff, an analyst at USAElectionPolls.com, feels presidential candidates do not give importance to Pennsylvania as the primary held there is quite late and when they do come to campaign it is just to raise money, similar to what Obama did.

The Pennsylvania Legislature has not made an effort to move the primary. This means that it would most probably be held on April 22, 2008. In comparison, as many as 30 states across the US might conduct their primaries as early as February 5, 2008.

It is because of the late primary held in Pennsylvania that the State is not given much importance by presidential candidates. By the time the primary is conducted in the State, the party nominations are already decided. The Pennsylvanians who do matter are the ones who can contribute substantially in terms of money.

Usually when presidential candidates come to Pennsylvania like Obama just did, they avoid media events. One faux pas by the candidate can ruin the entire campaign. They rather address the media in Iowa and New Hampshire, where it can make all the difference to their campaign.

Pennsylvanian voters are unfortunately reduced to mere spectators and the ones who do count are those who can write big checks and make big endorsements as this money goes to campaigning in states where primaries really make a significant difference.
