Joe Biden Believes Congress Is Unpopular Because Of Iraq

Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate thinks that the Congress has a low approval rating because his fellow Democrats have not been honest with the people about the actual limitations that the party faces in the Congress with its slim majority.

Biden said that the Democrats had just 51 senators and if a bill is brought to the house, the bill needs 60 votes to proceed and 67 votes to prevail over a presidential veto.

In a recently released report by Gallup Poll, just 14 percent of Americans have a lot of confidence in Congress. This is the lowest since Gallup started monitoring the confidence in Congress from 1973.

Biden believes that the Democrats in Congress will not be able to put an end to the war in Iraq unless 17 Republicans join them. He also believes that the Republicans will start distancing themselves from President Bush some time late fall.

In February 2007, Biden along with Sen Carl Levin, D-Mich, had put forth a proposal that would revoke the 2002 resolution that authorized the use of force in Iraq and replace it with lesser authority that would restrict the role of military in Iraq and start the withdrawal of American troops. Biden said that the liberals in his party oppose the proposal as they did not want to give President Bush any new authorization.

Biden feels that the Republicans will get together and come up with a similar proposal.
