McCain Camp Accuses Romney Of Misrepresenting His Spending Habits

Mitt Romney has a new campaign commercial in which he promises to reduce the size of the government if he is elected president. However, just hours before the commercial could be released on June 20, 2007, John McCain’s campaign accused Romney of misrepresenting his spending habits while he was the governor of Massachusetts.

According to Matt David, McCain’s spokesman, Massachusetts had a significant increase in spending while Romney was the governor. He said that the spending increased by 27 percent and the taxes and fees increased by $700 million each year during Romney’s tenure.

David said that Romney’s ad proved that he would go to any lengths in order to win the Republican nomination.

Romney’s new campaign commercial does not claim that he reduced spending while he was in office. However, it does say that he would be willing to make cuts when he becomes the president. Making spending cuts is one of Romney’s main campaign pitches to attract the conservatives.

Kevin Madden, Romney’s spokesman, contended that when Romney came into office Massachusetts had a $3 billion deficit and people were losing jobs. However, Romney was instrumental in wiping out the deficit without raising taxes.

In the last few weeks the McCain and Romney camps have been having words and now the face off is gradually getting more direct.
