A change in Lisa McDonald’s personal circumstances has turned a long-time passion into an occupation.

McDonald has been writing since she was five year old — everything from poetry and short stories to anthologies and essays.

“My maternal grandmother foresaw me being a writer or author from a very young age and encouraged me to pursue it,” said McDonald. “As a result of reinventing myself due to a change in familial circumstances, it became clear to me that writing was not meant to be a hobby but rather my vocation.”

McDonald has published two books, Little Boy Gan From Passion-Filled Everland and Reimburse the Universe. Colourfully illustrated by Lara Aiken and Paul Schultz, the books feature inspiring story-lines that teach children — and the adults in their lives — how to be the best they can be and to treat others with respect and kindness.

While the books were created for a school-age audience, McDonald said the themes speak to older readers as well.

“My books, although by description are children’s books based on the fact that they are illustrated, are resonating with all demographics,” McDonald said. “People who have no children or grandchildren are buying and reading my books simply for the wonderful reminder of what is fundamentally important in this world — the child-like spirit.”

McDonald said her intention in writing her the books is to emphasize “what is good with our world, what is inherently important about humanity and the reasons why we should all, no matter our age, cultural background, religious or spiritual beliefs, or affiliations, operate from a place of love, growth, kindness and humility. This message needs to be continually retold, circulated and shared with everyone.”

McDonald’s third book, Planet Pome-Granite, is expected to be released this fall, while Kismet Tales From Happy Trails is scheduled for 2016.
