Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal split
Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal have officially called it quits. Witherspoon, 31, and Gyllenhaal, 26, began dating while filming the upcoming thriller ‘Rendition.’ The pair tried to avoid the media and keep their relationship as private as possible but they were spotted March 23 dinning in L.A, with two other couples and “being playful.”
Witherspoon and actor Ryan Phillippe, 32, split in October after seven years of marriage and two children. According to a source close to Witherspoon, the actress had to end the romance because she just got out of a divorce and she didn’t have time for Gyllenhaal.
“They just recently broke up. It’s totally and completely over,” the source told PEOPLE. “Reese was the one who had to do it. She just got out of a divorce and was so concerned with her family, she just didn't have the time for him and he really demanded that."
The source told PEOPLE that things between Witherspoon and Gyllenhaal “slowly progressed” after they met but “it was never something she thought would happen from the start.”
“She just kind of developed this little crush over time,” the source adds. "They're still friends. Things are fine, but it was a clean break – (there's) no chance of getting back together."
Neither Witherspoon’s nor Gyllenhaal’s reps have commented on the breakup.
